The importance of having a VISION in your business

It has been found that many business owners, particularly start-ups, run their business without a vision in mind. These businesses focus on short term profit and forget about their long-term goal; building a successful business.

The premise of a business is often lost in the day to day activities. Businesses often forget about their goals once they get going and this often affects the path for which the business takes moving forward. A vision statement assists in ensuring the primary goals of the business are clear, and that the values it possesses are understood.

Below are 5 reasons specifying the importance of having a clear vision in your business:

  • It Encourages Decision Making

If nobody within the company refers to the core vision, and everybody is suggesting resolutions for immediate success, this is the beginning of how the company will lose sight of its goals and vision.

No matter how unimportant a decision may be, every decision and action should lead to the business reaching its vision.

  • It Helps Motivate Talent

In this day and age, individuals are no longer motivated by just earning potential. Business owners should consider their company’s social responsibility measures, professional growth and the meaningful roles found within the business.

You then need to ask; how can you attract and retain the right people? Motivation. The best way to motivate employees is by sharing your business vision and inspiring them in the way in which you were inspired to start with.

  • It Prioritises Resources

By referring back to your vision statement, you are able to prioritise important factors such as resources, and then tap into what encouraged your success in the first place. A business owner should then ask themselves:

  • How can I maximise the technology I currently possess?
  • How could my employees utilise available tools?
  • How can I solve issues impacting the business with the current available resources?
  • It Helps Define Company Culture

Rather than handing out incentives, it is important to recognise that there is more that goes into building a positive workplace. A business owner needs to again refer back to the core vision and ask themself:

  • Are my employees excited to come into the workplace?
  • Do my employees share the same goals as the company?
  • Is the office culture shifting from what it previously was?

Businesses should feel encouraged to experiment in different workplace landscapes whilst sticking to their vision.

  • It Instills Strategic Leadership

All business owners possess a unique leadership style and different companies benefit from these unique management techniques. To clearly understand how to manage your team, you would need to look at the founding vision. What has your company’s vision been? Successful customer service? Maximising profits?

To summarise, employees are often described as a company’s vital assets. In order to achieve long term goals, the business owner needs to encourage the entire team to be on board. Having a vision in place, allows employees to think independently whilst feeling empowered. In turn, it adds to creating a long standing, productive workplace.
